I love Tupac. Today is Friday. Friday is one of my favorite days of the week. Therefore, why not share someone I love with all of you on a Friday? That sounds completely logical to me. Indulge with me as I enjoy a little Tupac on this special day that the Lord has made.
Hmmm… I can start in so many directions. I guess I’ll begin with the first time I was really drawn to him and that was when he released, “Keep Ya Head Up.”
Then, I could segue into one of my favorite interviews he has ever done with Tabitha Soren for MTV News. I think the reason why I enjoyed this interview so much is because it really showed the charming side of Tupac that unfortunately, the media downplayed time and time again.
I also love, with a capital L, his love for the Black community. He really had a deep passion for bettering society, even with Thug Life tattooed on his lovely abs. In fact, what you may not know is that Thug Life was actually a cleverly coded saying that really was about empowering young Black people. He even was trying to implement a code of ethics amongst gang members, hustlers and the like that would improve and strengthen their relationship with the community by finding ways to build the community from the ground up while also stopping the innocent from being victims of violence.
Also, Tupac was a poet – the pen to paper kind and of course, I highly admire that.
Tupac will always have a special place in my heart. I remember when I wrote an essay about him in college. I was a freshman and I had to argue that he was indeed an intellectual, based on Antonio Gramsci’s definition of an organic and traditional intellectual. I remember putting the most effort on this project because I was so engulfed in his world that I really wanted to prove my point strongly with the assignment. I wrote and edited that paper so many times and fortunately, it paid off with an A+. It was a special moment that I’ll never forget and will always cherish and that is why a little Tupac is the best way for me to celebrate this Friday!
